I have a 1998 Ford Escort and the transmission is going...I have heard this is a sealed unit and computer controlled so it cannot be repaired...DOes anyone have an idea of how much a replacement would be? Or what else possibly could be repaired on a transmission with rough and slipping shifts. The problem is the worst when the car is cold.

Has the fluid ever been changed? Maybe a servicing would help.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to a transmission store like AAMCO or MrTransmission. They are in the business to sell transmissions, with good markups on parts.

Search the yellow pages for a local ATRA certified repair shop. You can call the BBB and find out if there are any negative comments about the place if you want.

They can give you some insight on what the problem could be, as well as the cost for a complete rebuild.

my advice is if you're not putting it in yourself, and you can't get a good deal from the junkyard, your tranny work will probably cost more than the car is worth. rebuilt tranny: $500-1500 depending on quality, new tranny: forget it! i've been in you're situation with an 87 ranger, i shouldve been smart enough to sell the damn thing the first time the tranny blew!

The best thing to do is get rid of it fast. Sell it, because it will cost you more than the car is worth.
