I cannot actually find a source, but I do watch American Idol, and he just auditioned. HE DIDNT MAKE IT!
after the failed audition, some company gave him a record deal as a joke and to help him improve his singing. He did come out with a CD after a while.

Just the audition. He didn't need to make it any further because the audition is what earned him more airplay and just a wee bit more than 15 seconds of fame.
