People here don't really use the term 'inner city' as it is meant in America. *Central* London is rather smart and does not have the sort of problems connoted by the words 'inner city'. The 'City of London' as opposed to Greater London is a financial district with a smaller proportion of residents than other boroughs.

The borough of Hackney is in the northeast and was recently named worst place to live in Britain. The lowest life expectancy is Newham (women) and Tower Hamlets (men). Hackney, Islington, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Southwark have the worst deprivation. Teenage pregnancy is most common in Lambeth, Croydon, Southwark, Newham and Lewisham. Camden, Sutton, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich have the worst housing. And the most violent crime is in Westminster, Islington, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Lambeth. Westminster is the most central of all these boroughs.

The 'City Of London' is a small part (about a mile square) of Greater London (Greater London being around 600 square miles around Central London.) The city of London is on a generally where all the business and financial companies are based.

I found a map through google which shows you the actual area:

The City of London is the area East of 'The City of Westminster'. The city of Wesminster the area more popular with tourists as it contains Covent Garden, most of the Theatres, night clubs, cinemas, hotels and houses of parliment.

Together the City of London and the City of Westminster make up the majority of central London.

As for saying 'Inner city of London' is just misleading, as 'Inner London' is regarded as the smaller middle part of Greater London which contains Camden, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, ,Kensington and Chelsea
Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and the City of Westminster boroughs.

There is a map in the wikipedia:

Basically by saying 'Inner City of London' is very misleading as it could mean 'city of London' or 'Inner London' so I'd check with who ever gave you the assignment!
Hope this helps!

Inner London is the name for the group of London boroughs which form the central part of Greater London and are surrounded by Outer London.

It is also a term that is sometimes used less precisely, and incorrectly, to describe with negative connotations the inner city areas of Central London outside such places as the City of London, Westminster and Kensington.

There is quite a big part of Greater London called Central London, and within Central London there is a small part know as the actual City of London.

You will find the city area near Liverpool Street Station.

Note that many places of note such as Westminster, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace are actually not in the City of London as such but rather the City of Westminster (which is one of the London Boroughs), near the area commonly called the West End. Although its not the City of London it is still known as Central London.

I think that if you are talking in terms, e.g., Social deprivation, then you must think of the following boroughs; Camden, City of London (not much deprivation there), City of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, Tower hamlets, Southwark, Lambeth and Wandsworth.
