In the UK certainly, the problem isn't an ID Card, its the fact that the card will be tied to a National Identity Register (NIR).

Initially this will only hold limited information on you (date of birth, current address) but over time (under the guide of "fighting terrorism", "stopping crime" or "protecting children") the file will contain or link to more information such as your spending habits, ethnicity, religion, sexual preferences, political leanings, health record (due to be linked up in Feb 2007 BTW), criminal record etc. The Government has already admitted that this is likely to be the case. Only recently (at a press conference on 6 Nov) Tony Blair said that the database would be trawlled for matches to unsolved crime-scene marks (meaning that it is highly likely that innocent people in the vicinity of a crime will be hauled in to explain exactly where they were and why on a given day).

If you have a problem with this scheme and believe in the right to privacy, the time to object isn't 2008 when the cards are introduced, but now, so they don't ever come in. Joining the No 2 ID campaign is a really good way to help in the fight against such an intrusive databases.

Well, that website is pretty much complete bunk, but I see no problem with a national ID card. It's not a bad idea, I think. As for micro-chip implanting...I see no moral dilemma with that unless it's made mandatory, and I don't really see that happening.

I don't appreciate the name-calling. I'm curious as to why you are so opposed to a national ID. Is there a reason?

We already have ID cards what difference does it make if they are readable or not? An implant is going to far. Planting something in your body vs. having a card you choose to carry. Really you may want to lay off the SciFi movies.

Card...no biggie. Implant? No way.

And you ought to know...prisonplanet and rense.com are looney websites. Conspiracy theories...and I thought my aged Aunt was crazy...
