China and Egypt were the first two ancient civilizations that established an educational system, they were a chosen few, they went by the cast system so they picked very carefully by whom of which they would teach to read and write and math etc.
Usually those within their Dynasty, (family, friends etc.) They were very protective of knowledge and the priests for the Pharoahs as well as the aids to the Kings of the Chinese Dynasties would extract their tongues so that they could not repear anything they were taught.
