It seems that the refs are calling more penalties than ever this year, whether it be justified or not! Is this part of Betteman's plan to better hockey, by creating more advantages to scores more goals, or are the refs just blind !!!???

The way the game is called right now is the way it should be called.

Before the strike, the game had become slow and ugly. There was no skating, too much play in the neutral zone, and far too many uncalled penalties for interference, hooking, etc. With the new calls, the league is giving skilled players - not slow-skating goons - the chance to shine.

Anyone who complains about the game now has no idea how hockey was meant to be played. It's not supposed to be slow and rough, it's supposed to be fast, with lots of skill and plenty of big, clean hits - not little hooks and grabbing.

Finally, you shouldn't blame the refs for all the calls - you should blame the players for constantly committing stupid penalties. They know the rules, but so many of them continue to break them. I don't care if it's even a minor infraction, it still deserves to be called.

Hockey can be fast and skilled without taking away all the hitting. That's what we're seeing now, and I think that for true hockey fans, it's a huge relief after the quagmire the NHL was stuck in for a decade.

Officials are definently not blind as they are calling more penalties.
As per the "New Standard of Play" the officials are doing and have been doing a good job. This is season 2 for the NHL and is the first season for all other USAHockey levels.
Check out www.usahockey.com and click on the new standard of play. No rules have been changed, just the grey area has been taken out, making penalties more black and white.

As a player and ref I thought the new standard was garbage, (I am more of a bruiser than a finesse player) but I have come to realize the new standard is how the game should be played.

This will allow for more goals, which will get more people interested in the game, though I perfer the "on the tip of my seat action" in 1-1 games.

haven't you been paying attention, Colin Campbell has told the refs 3 years ago to call everything. if the player doesn't stop hooking or grabbing all the calls will be made. its in the rules the refs are going to call everything everybody knows it. but the ones that complain are the ones that's teams are losing. that's the hole idea from Bettman cause he still trying to sell hockey to the US for the past 20 years and its not working. get the teams from the south out cause its hurting this game period.

Its rule that was not made by the ref's. And i dont like it. It takes away from the game. You have to stop the game and say who done what, send them to the box. Plus i think these penalties call the game. A lot of teams take advantage of their power play. And if the other team doesnt get as many power plays. Most of the time that team looses.

I think it'll go back to the way it was pre 2000. The refs are leading up with all these calls for a big backlash from fans and this will result in them going back to that New Jersey style street hockey... WHo knows. Some games they are great, some horrible.
