I'm learning the trucking business and want to know how many pallets will fit in a 48 ft (basic dry van) and a 53 ft truck. Also, if you do know can you break it down - as in I know you can 'pinwheel', go straight in, and put one row sideways. I also know some trailers are 102" and I think 98" so that makes a difference too. Is there anyway to find this info and have it all make sense? Thanks

The standard size for a pallet is 48x45. In a 53 foot truck you can fit 26 pallets in total, 13 on each side. double stacked that's 52.
In a 48 foot truck its 24 skids, 12 on each side. double stacked that's 48. This is will all pallets loaded side ways. The pin wheel method is only worth doing if the load is double stacked and unstableand needs to be loaded tightly. If the load is stable enough loading them all on sideways is just fine and not so time consuming.
Good Luck.

it will dependon the size of the pallets as they are not all 4 by 4,most new trailers are 102's,a 48 would have 24 max a 53 would have 26,this will be max in one level, you can double stack, this all depends on the load on the pallet.,eg if you have styrofoam containers you will have up to 52 palletts or 26 loaded double high,if you have drilling mud or car batteries you may only have 12 or 14 straight down the center, these numbers will also change due to the weight of the truck and trailer and extras your carrying.if you truck and trailer wieghs 30000 empty then you can haul 50000.if you unit is heavy then you haul less etc, stop by a shipping company, most of them keep pallet floor plans for there loading

In Canada, with CHEP's pallets, you can (sideways), put in 27 pallets (with a electric jigger) in a 48' Van, and 31 pallets in a 53' Van.

2 scenarios: depending on the DENSITY of the material you are trying to stuff into the 9 foot ceiling.

A) Material is Light-Weight products. IF the WHOLE trailer is filled with the same product, nose to tail, it is somewhat easier to calculate your weight limit.

There are ALL KINDS of SIZES for Pallets, but the most common is the Grocery Standard, 40 inch wide X 48 inches Long.

The Total Length you have available is

48 Foot

then the FIRST TWO pallets will always go in straight , as the total width is NARROWER at the front of the truck, then at the back. SO with 40 Inch Pallets that gives 2 inches on either side for the Curve that is the front of the truck.

The 2nd Row CAN be staggered so that the LEFT or RIGHT, but not both, if the Pallets can be turned sideways, then 1 can be staggered so the SPACE that is in the MIDDLE is used up by freight paying product.

The 3rd ROW now can be alternated , where the spot that was 8 inches shorter (remember the Grocery pallet size is 40 x 48) , will have room for the longer pallet (48 inches long) so now you will have 4 pallets in the length of the staggered 40 and 48 inch space instead of two times 4 feet. (you have saved 8 inches here).

The 4th and 5th row can be the same as the 2nd and 3rd row. So 4 more pallets, in 88 inches (of trailer length).

Same with 6th and 7th row. (so far you have used up 20 feet less 16 inches (the amount you save by staggering the pallats (IF they are able to be lifted from the side).

With Rows 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, depending on how wide the trailer is, you may be able to fit more 40 inch pallets in sideways. 6 rows of 40 inches is 240 inches or 20 feet.

So far you have used up 40 feet less 16 inches from the 1st set of staggered (Pinwheel?) pallets.

You have 9 feet 4 inches left before the doors will not close (and 1/2 inch will not make them close if you are over) So its better to be 1/2 inch shorter.

If you lay Rows 14 , and 15 straight on, they will be 8 feet long leaving 1 foot 4 inches to spare for load bars ,and security straps if you need them for anything that might shift.

This way you can get 30 pallets of product on the deck with a maximum weight of 1,500 pounds per pallet.

What if the product is light, then you could get 60 pallets into a trailer, but those 6 inches of pallet height could be paying freight instead of extra pallet.

Remember, Its the WEIGHT of the FREIGHT that pays the bills.

So, if the Height of the Pallet are 4 feet and Under, then you can DOUBLE STACK Pallets, but they must be light materials. (say 750 pounds per pallet or less) (No Potatoes)

53 FOOT TRAILER.

Similar as above, but now you can stuff more pallets in, but your weight is still limited to 45,000 lbs (Depending on your tractor etc).

So, 53 less the 1st row (Nose) of 4 feet length.

Leaves 49 feet.

Grocery Pallets are 40 inches x 48 inches.

12 rows of pallets fit sideways in 40 feet of space (24 pallets).

4 pallets straight on to fill up the end of the trailer.

So, now you have 30 pallets of product, but your TOTAL weight must not go over (X) whatever your maximum weight that the trailer can handle (approx 45,000 lbs).

So even if you had the room, you now are stuck because of the weight limitation.

You could Double Stack stuff in 4 foot cardboard bins and squeeze it into the trailer, but it would be tight.

But if its Ping Pong Balls (they are very light), you could stuff 60 Grocery Pallets full into a 53 foot trailer.

However......
Some products, like bins for Auto Parts are heavy, and each bin might be only 4 foot high by 4 foot wide and long, its DENSITY when loaded with Steel PARTS can be 5,000 lbs or more per bin.

So If its 5,000 Lbs per Bin, and you have a 45,000 LBs maximum weight, thats 9 Bins full of product over 48 feet.(more if you have a 53 foot trailer).

Since each bin is 4 feet long that means you want to keep the weight distribution about even across the whole trailer , so they all would line up in 1 column with spaces between the bins with blocker pieces of 2 x 4 and some nails driven into the wooden deck.

Dispatchers usually have loading diagrams for the heavy stuff. (or not).

Short answer 60 pallets of Grocery Product (light weight 750 lbs) Cereal boxes etc.
