many people love to learn more. They like to be knowledgable such as myself. Not only that but many of the higher paying jobs require higher education. Either spend some years in school and get paid well, or don't and struggle.

Basically to make money...ivy league colleges aren't non profit...and their tuition reflects that fact...that's the purpose of the institution...to profit...but higher education in the true sense of the term doesn't necessarily relate to ivy league...learning is fundamental...it's free...you dont pay to learn something...whether it's at home, in school, on the net...in a bus...wherever...perhaps lifes greatest lessons are learned by experiencing it first hand...that seems to be what the status quo definition of higher education strives for...to prepare one for lifes challenges...perhaps those lessons are truly higher education...

The purpose of higher education is to marry logic, reason, and creativity into the eternal quest of knowing ourselves, our world, our universe, and God. And once we know these things, we are able to help the next generation in the never-ending cycle of life.

The purpose is to have learned individuals in the community who can be doctors, lawyers, etc. and not just "play them on tv". Do you want to go to a doctor who just graduated high school?

Originally it was to give you a specialization in a certain academic area... something that was beyond trade school and high school, now it is more of a requirement for jobs that pay more than 20,000 a year.
