A great place to start is acting lessons/classes/workshops. It all depends on where you live, but try Googling it and see what you find in your area. The only way you can find out if it's good or not is by going and seeing for yourself.
Once you go to some acting lessons, you'll meet a lot of like-minded people and you'll be suprised the information that you can pick up from them.
You can always audition for local theatre, or short films, or even major films if you have the chance (though the major ones are hard to gain auditions for without an agent). It's essential to gain experience, because experience is always highly valued and it's also great for boosting your confidence and improving your technique.
A thing about agents: There are ALOT of scammers out there who'll try and screw you around so be really careful. It's hard to find reputable agents and even harder to get them to accept you, but if you're serious about what you want to do you shouldn't be intimidated by this. You should research some credible agents, see their clients, what actors they represent, and most importantly if they're associated with the right corporations and institutes and are credible in that regard.
Research actors that you like and see how they got their breaks, what they did, and how they did it.
Remember, to be an actor/ress, requires ALOT of research, and you must be prepared to accept rejection without letting it affect your confidence. It is a tough industry and it's certainly not burgeoning at the moment, so it's getting tougher, but remember to always follow your dream and RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH because the last thing you want is some tool playing you around and ripping you off.
Best of Luck.

a well-rounded actor is good at not only acting but: dance, voice and speech. so, take lessons on those things. it also helps if you live near a major city, which is where most auditions are held. research agents (can you say "google"?).

Study. read plays, monologues, research agencies, watch original films, watch plays, talk to people in the buisness, and NEVER think a question is stupid. there are no stupid questions, the more questions you ask the more you know..

&&&... if you are seeking to do it professionally, be sure to know what you are getting into. Most actors are out of work or waiters. and are struggleing to pay bills. an actor's life is not glamorous.

Good luck!

Some of these answers kinda jump the gun. An agent isn't needed untill you actually start looking for a part (cart before the horse thing).

Check local universities for acting classes. There may even be a school that only teaches acting in your area.

The best advice I can give on acting is a quote from Spencer Tracey: "Don't get caught at it".

Call the Universities and Community Colleges in your city. You want to speak with someone in the theater department. Ask for recommendations for acting schools or acting teachers. You need about 10 years of solid acting classes. After that you can audition for plays in the city where you live. You are not ready for a Talent Agent. You have to walk before you can run! Agents prefer actors with a strong background in theater and/or musical theatre, although it's not necessary. An MFA is not necessary, but, it paves the way if you want to continue your acting studies to get one. It puts you in the "front of the line," so to speak!
