My best friend lives in Penticton,BC. Her parents are completely unfit to be, well, parents. They have drug problems, they drink, and recently her mother has been diagnosed with Lukemia. It is being treated in Vancouver where her father stayes with her 85% of the week while my friend stays at her home and takes care of her sister. She is 16 years old, and she wants to move out and live with me in Calgary, Alberta. However, she does not want her parents to go to jail or get in any trouble. I was wondering what the laws are and how she could go about this. Thanks.

She should contact the Children's Aid Society, who will explain the options open to her.

Hi, laws regulating this kind of stuff (child abuse, and we're not talking about physical abuse here) is not legislated by the federal govmnt but by the provincial gvmnt. I live in quebec, and here, if you report these people they would take them to rehab (not jail) and try to find for the kids a decent place to stay. but i don't know if it's the same thing in BC.

Link for reporting child abuse in BC: http://www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/child_protection/reportabuse.htm

Note your legal obligation if you suspect abuse: "Anyone who has reason to believe that a child has been or is likely to be abused or neglected has a legal duty under the Child, Family and Community Service Act to report the matter."
