I remember hearing someone a few years ago trying to councel someone who had a drinking problem. The person doing the councelling had never been a drinker and I found it funny. If you don't know the ramifications of excess in any form how can you know how it feels and really give advice to anyone. There are lots of books and theories as to why people do what they do but the best people to do councelling it seems would be those who had had the experience and recovered from it. I believe that most things are mind over matter and weak minds cause a lot of problems.

There were a group of psychotherapists whom Freud could have asked. He invented the theories but analysis was already being practiced. He would have to train a therapist and this person would psychoanalyze Sigmund.

He wasn't performing psychoanalysis. He was postulating that a psychotherapist would need to have undergone therapy to do so.
