As opposed to mindless nationalism?

I've seen questions and answers at YA recently that made patriotism look like a mental illness. Any insights as to how love of country evolves into seething, salivating lunacy? And what's the end result of that?

In America, healthy patriotism is standing up for rights and the rights of others; exercising political power by voting for the candidates and propositions you feel best reflect your opinions; and respecting others even though you disagree with their politics and opinions.

Defending your country from threats in times of war and in times of peace is very patriotic; but not everybody is qualified to serve in the military. Thank You to everybody who has or is still defending my rights.

Patriotism is love of country,
To be employed gainfully and pay taxes,
To volunteer for community service if needed,
Not to resent any lawful order when ordered to fight in wars,
To vote wisely so that only the right persons will be elected.
