DSL uses your telephone line. It uses a portion of the line you don't use when you make a phone call. DSL usually has a 12 month contract.
Cable uses your cable line, similar to what you use for TV. Cable usually does not have a contract, but you can't get a promo if you just had one.
Cable is more reliable and can give a faster connection. Phone lines are older and even though it uses the data portion of the line your connection can still be effected.
Both are pretty competitive now, but if you have cable and you can get a good deal go with it.

DSL (Digital Service Line) - it is provided by your local telephone company and it uses telephone cable to hok you up in the internet, while if you are in the US, DSL (Direct Satellite Link) is a different technology. While High Internet Cable is using microwaves and radiowaves in transmitting signals just like your ordinary cable TV. While a DIAL-UP, same principle as a DSL but as the word implies, you need to DIAL first before you can connect to the internet, and in comparison toDSL and HIC, the speed is super slow. DSL can reach up to a maximum speed of 10-60 mbps, while HIC is 100 and above mbps, and if you insist in using a dial-up the maximum speed that you could acquire is up to 56 kbps

DSL communicates over copper wire, phone line.
Cable communicates over co-ax, same as cable tv.
Cable offers faster speed, but is a little more expensive,
but worth it.
Each needs a modem to connect between the communication
source and the computer.
A router is also desirable. Many have a built-in hardware firewall
that is great first level security.

Cable shares your connection with others which can result in lower speed in areas where you have lots of users. DSL is a set rate that you get for both upload and download. Cable tends to have much faster download with slower upload. I have had both, and I prefer cable. They are both so fast though that it really doesn't make much difference.
