I have a Hoover Floormate and it does a great job. Dries as you go so no wait to walk on the floor.

The Hoover Floormate is a pretty nice machine that will let you do dry pick up for all the stuff on the floor. After you've vacuumed the floor, you can clean it with a wet scrub.
Another machine you might consider is the Roomba Scuba. It's like a robot mop. It makes life pretty easy but it won't work if you have non-sealed wood floors.

I like using my steam mop. It cleans most dirt absolutely effortlessly, uses nothing but water, and sanitizes as it cleans.
There are a few drawbacks. 1) Be sure to get a steam mop / cleaner that has a sufficient water reservoir to complete your task. 2) NEVER use on gum, etc. It'll just make a total mess!!!!!!
3) The cleaning pads are washable, which is nice, but if you have a large area to clean and don't have a spare cleaning pad, can be a nuisance.

I'VE ALWAYS FOUND ELBOW GREASE TO WORK THE BEST. Or you can try one of those new micro fiber flat surface mops, but get a few washable refills you need more than just the one that comes with the mop.

I use the swifter and like it. I wash my floors still about twice a month but for any other spills it's the swifter. I've tried some cheaper ones but they just don't work.

Save the planet, and use elbow grease... as if there isn't enough overuse of electricity with leaf blowers and stuff you want to add more?
