Originally the condenser coils were mounted on the top of the refrigerator along with the compressor and the evaporator coils in one complete unit which sat on top of what was essentially an ice box. As refrigerators became more modern the condenser coils were mounted on the rear of the refrigerator. They worked fine like that as long as they were far enough away from the wall and there was enough air flow going up the back and out the top of the unit. People wanted to "build in" the refrigerator and make it look as part of the cabinetry and the rear mounted "static" condenser coils would not have proper air flow. They moved the condenser coils under the unit and to provide proper air flow they mounted a fan.

The "static" condenser could become laden with dust and dirt and still do a good job of dissipating the heat as long as there was air flow across them but a better job if kept clear and clean.

The"forced air" condenser under the unit needs to be kept clean and free of dust and dirt or the unit will not function properly and the fan must run properly or there will not be enough air flow.

The "static" condenser system requires less attention and maintenance than the "forced air" system.
