i just bought a new GE Front Loading Washer with matching Dryer...I really like these...They use a very small amount of water and you can put 15 paris of jeans at a time in...It has its own internal water heater, so it can use that instead of pulling off your water heater when needed....They cost a little more, but my water and power bill have decreased since the purchase...There are many brands, but the salesperson really sold me on this set...
You can find info at www.ge.com

Most of the new washers are energy efficient & will save you money on the water bill. Which is great.

I like the front loader type of washer because it doesn't have an aggitator that can be harsh on clothing & cause rips & tears over repeated use.

Try to get one without too many electronic "bells & whistles" that will be expensive to repair if they break. Get the basic electronic panel.

Consider getting the heater element which will conserve your hot water from your hot water tank, as it has it's own heater. This is a nice feature so you can run your dish washer & clothes washer at the same time & have enough hot water for both.

Measure the area were they will be installed. If you have accordian shutters in you laundry room make sure there is enough room to open & shut the doors. Also important is to take note of how the water lines are placed in your laundry room---are they on the right or the left. Then take note as to which way the doors open on the washer & dryer when you are looking at the floor samples at the store. Give the machine adequate space for hoses & vent in the back of the machines too. Also take note if you need an electric dryer or natural gas for the dryer.

Some washer & dryers enable you to change which way you want the door to open. Some are permanent so be sure you will be able to open the door fully when loading & unloading laundry.

The high efficiency washers like the front loaders require "HE" special detergent which you will need to switch to. Regular detergent will have too much suds.

I purchased the Maytag Neptune.

Happy shopping! & then washing & drying!

Don't buy a front load washer. After a couple months, they start to smell like mildew. Your clothes don't smell, but the washer and laundry room do!

If you have the money, Maytag Neptune, low water usage, less soap required, clothes tumbled instead of agitated, so less wear. Buy the matching dryer, or you will be waiting on the dryer to dry your clothes all the time.

Get a large tub so you can do large loads at a time and make sure it has the automatic softener dispenser, this is one feature I didn't get and wish I did.
