I've been dating a 35 years-old guy on and off for about 8 months. I'm thinking about getting him a Ralph Lauren wallet (about $150 worth), since a wallet is something he might need. Since he is in his 30's, I feel like I cannot give him something too cheap. Do you think I'm spending too much or too little? What other gift ideas do you have? What is appropriate in my case?

$150 is just about how much he pays for dinner every time we go out on a date. (FYI, we go out about once or twice a week.)

The wallet is something he might need, but may not want. I wouldn't risk spending that kind of money on something that would have the same effect if it were $100 cheaper.

Instead, be inventive. Think about what he likes, and try to imagine the craziest thing that you could do for him that relates to it. If he likes sports, get him two tickets to a game (if he invites you, it's great "quality time"; if he invites a friend, they'll both be remembering you for it). If he likes cars, get him a lesson or two with a professional racecar trainer (it isn't as hard as you might think).

PS: Don't look at my examples, but what I'm getting at. You know him better than I do (I hope!) - find something that he likes and let your imagination go wild with the perfect gift! Believe me, you can find this perfect gift without breaking your budget.

Best of luck!

It's too expensive -- for a wallet. It's not a bad gift idea, but it's just too much for a wallet, and he's unlikely to be too too impressed by the brand name.

Other ideas, similar price range:

A cashmere sweater. Lands' End and Orvis have nice ones.

A nice leather 'dopp kit' (http://images.google.ca/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=RNWE,RNWE:2006-26,RNWE:en&q=dopp+kit), filled with some decent toiletries.

Event tickets -- something for the two of you to do on New Year's Eve, say?

This -- a bottle of wine and a newspaper from his date of birth -- is a cute idea:

If you're not broke, $150 isn't too much. This assumes a high degree of 'not broke,' or few other people to buy for, though. Don't skimp on your siblings or similar for his sake.

I think that a $50 wallet would be better and it'll last for a long time.

No,No, No. You don't spend that kind of money on someone who is off and on....There are alot of nice gifts for $20.00-$50.00. If he likes sports, give him a jersey/sweatshirt with his favorite team. If he is more cultural, take him to a concert to hear like the Transsiberian orchestra, maybe a nice pen set with his name on it.....It would of helped us if you had given us his likes or some info. about him....Do not spend more than $50.00

I date him a lot longer before I bought him a $150.00 gift. That is something you spend on your husband or fiancee.

$50.00 MAX. You can find something nice for that amount.

i think it is perfect. it is not too sentimental or extremely pricely. it is appropriate and not like a $20 blockbuster gift certificate.
