You have some good suggestions already so here are a couple I recommend from my collective. I am a huge film buff and own genres that date back to the 1920's.
Depending on what type of mood you're in, I don't think you'd go wrong with anything from the following ( in my opinion of course. )
Bachelor Mother- 1939 with Ginger Rogers. A timely sweet film, not too long in length and extremely charming and funny. Any age group would be pleased to view it.
The Thin Man-1934. This movie basically started the genre of film noir with style, class and humor. William Powell and Myrna Loy are perfect together. If you're in the mood for a good mystery in addition to comedy, this is a good one.
Sullivan's Travels-1941 with Veronica Lake- I adore this one, it's very cool for the time period.
Gunga Din-1939 with my fave actor of all time, Cary Grant. It's about the uprising of India and the soldiers involved- classic.
Good luck in your decision. Hope this helps!

2001: A Space Odyssey...or Casablanca. Once Upon a Time In the West is also a good one. If you want something a little more obscure try the Fellini film 8 1/2.

Twelve Angry Men starring Henry Fonda. its a wonderfully simple film about twleve men on jury duty assigned to decide if a young boy is innocent or guilty of killing his father. Excellent film.
Yahoo! Movies:
In what seems to be an open and shut murder case, twelve jurors slowly begin to take serious interpretation of the "beyond a reasonable doubt" clause and over the course of an hour and a half debate their impending verdict on a hot New York summer day.

My favorite classic movie is called "The Bad Seed", it came out in 1956. It's about a young girl that shows no remorse, for the murders she has committed. She won't hesitate to kill, if you get in her way. She's pure evil

I'd say Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, and Humphry Bogart. Its cute, funny, classic, and Audrey Hepburn steals the movie. I really recommend this one. Its fast paced and doesnt leave you in boring spots.
