Could it be used as a love song on a CD of love songs to my girl friend? Do you think it would offend her.

I thought it was a pretty song, but never knew the meaning of it.

Roberta was at a don mclean concert and this is what she felt sitting there mesmerized by him. He sang the "bye bye miss american pie" song which is a tribute to buddy holly, who died in a plane crash when McLean and Roberta were kids. It is what Don means with the words "the day the music died".

To many of their generation, the day it happened was much like when John Lennon died, or Tupac, or JFK, etc. Because she understood his empathy for that tragic day while listening, he "killed her softly" by bringing up so beautifully the tragedy of that fateful day.

It does sound like a love song, but it's not.

Relisten to both songs, american pie first, and this will make sense.

There are correct answers on here and incorrect ones. The song was not written by Roberta Flack as some stated on here. A local LA songwriter heard Don Maclean singing in a club one night and was so moved by his performance, she wrote this song about it. Also, the song American Pie was considered a rock chronicle and a tribute to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens who all died in a plane crash. Also mentioned in the song were the Beatles aka the marching band, the Rolling Stones aka satan, Janis Joplin aka the lady who sings the blues, Bob Dylan aka the jester, the Byrds are mentioned by the phrase "eight miles high and falling fast", but there may be others as well.

It's killing her that the singer seems to know her life and all of her secrets, and is singing them out loud for everyone to hear. The song was actually written in the early 70's - a local L.A. singer heard Don McLean in concert, and was especially impressed with his song "Empty Chairs" - she told some songwriting friends that it was like he was singing her life up on the stage, thus inspiring the song! :)

The song was written as a tribute to Don McLean (American Pie) . I believe the writer means his music was mesmerizing. It was originally released in 1971, but the most popular version was by Roberta Flack --Song of the Year in 1974.

I always thought it meant there was some sad thing in her life that he described so exactly, it was like a stab in the heart. You have to listen to it carefully, it's a beautiful song. I think Roberta Flack sang it.

The song is about a woman who is listening to a mans song. She felt the song was about her life and her lack of love. It hurt her to listen to it, it was killing her but because he was doing it to music, he was killing her softly, by exposing her lack of life and love.
