It's their unspoken duty to seek the truth and not accept things (especially rumours) at face value.

did you know that a day or so before 'they' crucified Jesus, Simon Peter (one of his apostles) asked Jesus who was his favorite? Here Jesus was telling them of His coming demise and they were concerned about who ranked higher with Jesus. They completely missed the point. Your question reminded me of this ~ you're not concerned with the gossip itself, the erosive, destructive effect it has on both people but you're concerned with who's dumber? I think we know.
