As a child raised by uncaring people, no love, not only self esteem is lacking but the worst of Depression takes you into a world of other horrors like, thoughts of killing yourself, loneliness, stopping all relationships with other people or isolation, not sleeping at night and losing your good thoughts that turn into nightmares. Until a Doctor sees the problem, the results with out help are like torture. I know, I have lived it. Self esteem is just a part of it. Parents rarely see it or don't want too. They are ashamed and selfish and pass it off as a stage of your life. Believe me. It is not.

A good percentage of it YES. Society is so built up on a person's "looks", how they are "dressed", how they "act", how "popular" in school one is, it could be so many things that determines a kids happiness- or self esteem.....A child's personality is usually formed by age 5, so the parents totally have a lot of hands on in the forming of a child's personality. BUT always remember, when you turn 18, your a legal adult, and you can make all the changes you want!

These are all temporary, but you are the soul and you are eternal. We have veils of illusion over our consciousness which if we want to actually be happy we have the veils removed. The quickest and easiest way to do this is to chant the Maha Mantra or Mantra for deliverance. And what do we want to be delivered from (misery, suffering, illusion)
Just chant loud enough to hear each syllable
