It was put in place for farmers who need the daylight to work. I personally think it is ridiculous in this day and age. I would be all for giving it up. Arizona doesn't even abide by it

Governments often promote it as an energy conservation measure, on the grounds that it allows more effective use of natural sunlight resource in summer time. Since there is less darkness in the "waking day", there is less use of electric lights. Some opponents reject this argument (see below, Criticism).

No we do not have to do it. it was started for the benifit of those that live way out of a town . to many were being hit and killed by drivers that couldn't see them in the dim winter morning light.But then with the shrter days drivers should aslo have trouble seeing them if they have to stay late at school also.
