This is so gross. I don't even like talking about it but I need your help folks. I was bad and left my sink full of dirty dishes for um... let's just say it was a long time. Let's just say paper plates and cups may have been involved. Um.. anyway, now that I've cleaned up, there's this smell not unlike a toffee candle or maple syrup that greets me when I come in from outside. I'm wondering if it's the heater (which I've started to use again as it's getting cold now in So Cal), or possibly a gross cockroach infestation. Has anyone had experience with this? I know what to do (clean like mad), but is that maple syrup smell the smell of cockroaches? Bleh, please pardon me, I hope none of you were eating. Bleah.

Roaches do have a gross sweet odor but it's usually if you have a really big problem. I've noticed the smell coming mostly from the piles of hundreds of corpses and roach "droppings" that accumulated in specific areas. Hundreds had infested a lamp base and that thing smelled bad. They moved into the inner workings of my microwave and it still smells funny to this day (3 years later)

If you never saw the roaches then I'm not sure if that's the problem. You would have see some (dead and alive) when you finally cleaned up the dishes if that's what you think caused it. They also love empty beer bottles/cans. If the roach problem is big enough to create a smell somewhere, there's really no way that you would never see even one unless they are finding a food/water supply somewhere else (like the basement). You would see at least a few dead bodies from time to time too.

The smell could be something else like your heater. Maybe you developed a weird mold/slime problem in your drain from letting the dishes sit and that's stinking up the house.

Cockroach Smell

Not sure about the smell, it's very possible. Definitely sprinkle boric acid powder around behind the stove and fridge, under sink, along the baseboards around the house as long as no kids or pets are around. Also you can buy raid fogger, it works wonders, I used it myself as I noticed a roach or 2 here or there. It sicked me out so bad I set off 3 foggers in my house. I know that's too much but I just couldn't deal with roaches. I know what you mean, they make you feel disgusting like you are dirty or something, so KILL them up, see how they like that. Also throw some bleach down the garbage disposal, just make sure you rinse it out too.

They have a smell but I wouldn't say it is comparable to Maple Syrup or Toffee. Try burning some nice scented insenses to create a heavy fog in the place. Also scent might be coming from the drain, freshen it with fresh lemons/limes jucie/pulps.

Get out the boric acid powder and sprinkle behind the fridge, stove, wall and floor edge- and keep it away from kids and pets- you can also sprinkle under the sink and put steel wool around the pipe under the sinks if there is space for the bugs to get in- get rid of bags and cardboard boxes- it helps to keep packages like flour, sugar, cormeal, rice, noodles in freezer or fridge- and take trash out nightly and keep crumbs picked up- D

they do give off a sickly sweet odor. My college rented house had them and I remember that sweet odor, like a rotten maple syrup.

what you are smelling is coolant. this usually can indicate a couple things. either u have a coolant leak in your heater core, or a coolant leak on your engine. pop the hood to inspect for leaks and see if the same smell is around the engine. if not the heater core has most likey sprung a leak and will need to be replaced.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk

yes, they do give off that odor.
you should get your house bombed for the rest of the roaches and do it again a couple months after that too.

cockroaches are too small to give off a smell. Sounds like you need to devote a week and clean your house top to bottom. that will do the trick.
