If it's all about the history of the rivalry, it has to be USC vs. Notre Dame... that goes way back to the early 1930's (if not the late 20's) and they've played 70 some times over the years... (imagine going from Southern California to South Bend before commercial air travel) to play a football game.

The greatest historically would definitely be Army vs. Navy... this game has been irrelevant in recent years, but back in the day both Army and Navy were top football programs, plus they had the military rivalry to go with it.

The greatest of all time is Ohio State and Michigan. It's been the last game of the regular season for each team since 1935 and it frequently decides who represents the big ten in the rose bowl and many times the eventual national champion.. On top of that both teams are usually highly ranked and/or undefeated. Oklahoma/Texas is a great regional rivalry too, but OSU vs. Michigan is so much more, since both teams have been so good for so long.

USC-Notre Dame is the greatest rivalry of all time a rivalry that has produced 23 national championships. This isnt a rivalry based on location of the schools, this is a rivalry based on the greatness of the two schools involved. OSU and Michigan if they were both just ok teams would still be rivals, Texas and Oklahoma would still be rivals no matter what, in state rivalries would still exist, as well as the service acadamies. USC and ND though only exist because they are both such great universities on the football field.

By the way how could the OSU and Michigan game produce 19 national champions, combined they have only won 13.

Ohio State vs Michigan

I was born and raised in Ohio by an Ohio State Dental School grad, my dad. He'd take me to games every Saturday and teach me all about tradition and the history of Ohio State football. I learned the fight song Across the Field, the Buckeye Battle Cry, Hang on Sloopy, Carmen Ohio, I Wanna go Back, and many more. I watched the Neutron Man dance his heart out in the 80s and 90s. We chanted Eddie-Eddie-Eddie-Eddie during several of George's 200+ yard games during his Heisman year. I wanted to cry when the #1 buckeyes lost to Michigan State in 1998. I did cry when they won the Fiesta Bowl for a National Championship in 2003. Woody Hayes is an icon and a legend. I want to "pay it forward". I bleed scarlet and grey. I never miss the band coming out on the field before the game. I sit in the nosebleed section of St. John arena to watch the Skull Session. I get buzzed at Hiney Gate and think the Danger Brothers rock. These traditions mean the world to me but do not by any means make me a Buckeye. What makes me a Buckeye not giving a damn for the whole state of Michigan. Knowing the real words to Hail to the Victors. Hating Michigan's ugly uniforms. Making fun of Michigan's band for needing music mounted to thier instruments. Laughing at Michigan's band as they run/march all over the field. I want Michigan to win every game of the season except when they play the Buckeyes, yet I'm quite pleased when they get creamed. Lloyd Carr is a choke artist, Tressel is a God. Saturday afternoon I'll be in the Horseshoe ready to watch the greatest rivalry in college football...

Ohio State vs. Michigan.

The Red River Shootout is pretty good, but I still think that Michigan/Ohio State is the most hotly contested matchup year in and year out, although USC/UCLA and USC/Notre Dame are close. It just seems that every single year, the deciding factor of who wins the Big Ten and the trip to the Rose Bowl is the Michigan/Ohio State game. And that's not even mentioning the 80,000-100,000 fans who pack the stadium every year to cheer for their respective teams!

While I may be a fan of UCLA and the Pac-10 Conference, I do feel compelled to say this:

GO BIG BLUE!

People are so hyped up over Ohio St. and Michigan as well they should be it is definately one of the best rivalries especially this edition. Cause one of them will be playing for the national championship. But I still don't say it's the best but definately in the top five. I'd give the best to Harvard and Yale that rivalry has been going on since 1875 and they are the reason why this game is what it is today. Yale having the most national championships than any other college to date. My second choice would be the Army and Navy game. Where have you seen so much hatred thats been going on since 1890. There is so many rivalries that they each have their own qualities as to why they should be the best. But I've stated mine and it's cause of all these rivlaries is to why we all love college football.

And just so you know Ohio St. and Michigan started playing in1897 and OU and Texas started in 1900. So they have the edge but both are awesome rivalries and are always good games.

My opinion, "The Glamour Game" USC vs Notre Dame.

However, Army/Navy, Auburn/Alabama, Ohio State/Michigan, Oklahoma/Nebraska have traditionally provided many great games over the years also.

It's simple. ESPN voted Michigan-Ohio State number 1. It was voted on by both sports writers from all over the U.S. and also a poll of the entire country. I understand Harvard-Yale like the guy above said, but they have not had competitive teams in decades. And it is ALWAYS the last game of the year for both teams, which means at the LEAST, it means the big Ten Conference title.
