Most of the time, I let it be. There was a small
cottonwood tree growing in the dirt around the patio. it had grown a couple of years and was looking really good. Maintenance had to cut it down this fall. It doesn't seem fair.

I let it be which doesn't necessarily mean letting it grow like others have answered...sometimes it means leaving it to be exactly as it is...not to grow but maybe even to degress.
