I mean, Jesus Christ, what the hell does America make anymore. Most of our cars are being made in other countries. It's a wonder that we're all not living in poverty!

Two basic reason. Taxes and unions. The various trade agreements we've signed with other countries gives them a serious advantage when it comes to taxes and tariffs on imports and exports. And, whatever is left of our industry in this country is unionized to the point that no one can gain a profit.
Kind of off the subject, but relates well. Consider raising minimum wage. What happens? Joe Blow hires in and starts at wages that took you two years to attain? You complain and they give you a subsequent raise to reflect the fact that you have seniority. Across the board and across the nation, this inflation takes place virtually over night. Suddenly, as a shareholder, my dividend is worth practically nothing. I vote to increase the cost of the products we're producing. What just happened to your minimum wage increase? Now, add to that scenerio, the benefits packages negotiated and the hire wages because you're unionized. Wouldn't it just make more sense to send the unassembled parts over seas to some third world scess pool where the people will gladly work for a dollar a day? I'll gladly pay whatever taxes and tariff are imparted because I know I can just pass them off on the consumer, protecting my profit margin.
Detroit is about the last bastion of industry in this nation. We're now a consumer nation. Eventually, this will all come back around and bite us in the butt. Unless of course, the rest of the world follows suit -- they usually do (historically speaking) inwhich case, we reinvent ourselves and the game... And *sigh* Jesus had nothing to do with this one. It's all on us and the politicians we elect! God help us all!

im not sure how but the American economy is still the fastest growing of any industralized nation and china is the only one beating us but they will soon slow down and be like ours and then the chinese will demand to be paid more and you will be buying things made in india untill that nation gets too rich then things built in nigeria or somewhere but we will all be dead and gone by then factories etc will eventually build up every nation untill none are poor thats my theory but it will take many centuries before all that happens

Most things are imported from southeast Asia because factory workers there get paid peanuts, and there's a large workforce base. American workers are simply too expensive for manufacturers and retailers to make a profit.
