I have a lot of gay friends who adore Kylie Minogue, and from observation she does seem very popular in the gay community in Australia. Why, out of all the possible singers, was she chosen as one of the major gay icons?

I have absolutely no idea why she is a gay icon but good on her. I guess at the time she became a gay icon there was no one better out there for the Aussies. I think it is just who she is - what gives anyone the factor of being a gay icon.

She is very popular in the Australian gay and lesbian community. I for one am seeing her this weekend in concert. I think it's just about her costumes, her performances and her songs. She appeals to everyone.

On the news so far about her tour I have seen so many groups there. There are the guys, there are 8 year old girls, there are chicks in their 40's. She's just a widely appealing singer. I think the gay community in the UK far overtakes the gay community in Oz when it comes to Kylie.

I never heard she was supposed to one. She is not so much a gay icon as she is an actress from the classic age of movies who was known for her style. The plot for that movie was changed from the original novel. The George Peppard character was gay in the book yet she is somehow drawn to and has feeling for him. That is the way I understand it. I have not read the book myself. I suppose Holly is seen then as tolerant or a character that does not discriminate. There have been gay icons in the past that were actually gay like Liberace and some that were not gay like Mark Spitz the five time goldmetal swimmer from the 70s and Tom Sellack. Greg Louganis the Olympic diver was one and he happens to be gay.

I think the answer is that the gay icons prove no harsh deed or violence towards gay men. female icons are after all female, weak in physicality and therefore shown as more loving and nurtering than the harsh brutality of the male gender. this is why so many gay men love their mums I suppose and hate their dads. Women have never had the upper hand as to their physical strength, therefore they are seen as the weaker physical sex. that is to their downfall of course and it would take a very strong woman to kick her male abusive tormentor in the balls and run away from his control. so much dominant abuse in a womens life comes from the fact that men know they can beat any woman into submnission, provided she is stupid enough to stay with him and even say she "loves" him. stupid women will always remain stupid and abused. Probably serves them right.

Any hot female singer/actress is a gay icon. You can go up and down the time-line from the 1920's through the present. For some reason Gays love to put up strong women or strong women who are tragic in some way up on a pedestal... I'm not sure why... Perhaps it's the feminine-types living vicariously through them. Admiring them because they are women, and in charge of their lives.

im not sure but madonna too. I think it has something to do with their performances. They dont just stick to one image, they are experimental and if u look at kylie she has worn show girl outfits and Madonna, the flash dance workout gear. This is something that other artistes wouldnt do, but they did. I think gay people can relate becase they are experimental too? I dont know if i m right but this is the best explaination i could come up with.

She sang dancing queen at the Sydney Olympics but she may have already been the icon then
or it's because she often sings that song

Yes, but mostly in Austrailia and the UK. Home-born icons are much more saintly than imports.
