You can't introduce your topic until you know it. Therefore, write the body first and the intro/conclusion last. I learned that in my advanced english class and it's actually a very helpful tip. Also, I can help edit your essay if you'd like. (email me at xx3DoorsDownFan@yahoo.com)

If you tend to ramble or stray from your thesis, try outlining your papers before you begin writing. In a five-paragraph essay, your thesis should have three points, and you should devote one paragraph of your essay to each point. I find it helpful to write the paper 2 nights before it's due, so I can sleep on it for a night. It's amazing how different it looks the next day; it makes editing a lot easier. I'd also suggest that you check out your school's writing center for help.
Also, unless your teacher says it's okay, don't ever write essays in the first person, and don't use the second person "you". Neither of these should be used in college essays, unless the instructor requests it. Imagine that you're writing for an audience outside of your classroom; your classmates may care about YOUR opinions, but the rest of the world just wants to see evidence that supports your thesis. Good luck.....

Easy as 1, 2, 3....Now relax

1. Tell them what you're going to tell them (called Intro)
2. Tell them.....the total subject matter
3. Tell them ..what you told them...(sumarized)
again:

Now: Pick any subject: mine will be English Comp:
and I shall pick 3 things about my subject:
1. I would like to tell you why I always liked English Comp.
2. I always liked English Comp because I could be myself. I could write that I really enjoyed writing as a child. I would write letters to Santa, letters to the Easter Bunny, and letters to my father in the US Navy...far far away. When my letters came back from my DAD, I would take the card or letter and read it 100 or 1000 times.....It meant so much to me.
Then when I was older, I wrote to my boyfriend in the service. There I was again, but this time he was in the US ARmy.
Then I decided to work in Accounting Dept. of a major electric missile and space company. They paid for night school and then I got to take English Comp again. This time I learned about Dr. Martin Luthur King....and I read Letters From Birmingham Jail...wow I had no idea he wanted to go to jail rather than give up his ideas as a man. I wrote a 50 page paper on him because this was the late 60's and we had riots and bad things happening in Philadelphia, Pa near my hometown. I always enjoyed English Comp because I was the author.

3. In summary, I though English Comp would be difficult but I started writing as a child and my love of being an author continued throughout life. It got me through college and graduate school.

So back to 1, 2, 3....Decide on 3 parts to whatever you want to write about
1. Write down 1 word - then 1 sentence for this Introduction
2. Write down 1 word- then 1 sentence about your subject.
3. Write down 1 word - then 1 sentence about your summary.

Now, do you get the idea, it is as easy as 1, 2 & 3 especially because you are the author...yes not famous yet, but you are still an author and no one can steal that idea or your education from you....that's from my 88 year old mom Flo who passed in 2002!

Another key to watch out for is to make sure the paper is written all in the same tense. It is generally accepted that essays about novels should be written in present tense.
