i LOVE MY GUINEA PIGS!!! i cry every time my parents say i might have to get rid of them, but my parents dont like them so well but they might let me get the rat, so please dont say that i dont love them because i love them with all of my heart. the two piggies are too much to handle, but a rat will be easier.

What do you do? Get rid of the pets you have and don't get anymore. All rodents smell, rats are no different. Sad.
Please, research your lifestyle before getting another animal.

You can't say you don't have time for guinea pigs and then replace them with another pet. If you don't have time, you won't have time for rats either.
For rats you'll also want to adopt 2 or more. Rats do groom themselves but they still live in cages like a guinea pig. The cage needs cleaned just as often.
Also be aware you'll have a hard time selling an adult guinea pig. Everyone wants cute little babies, not adults. So maybe you csn give them away instead to a good home? Just be careful because some people take "free" small pets and use them for feeding snakes.

Whatever you do if you do get a rat - you have to get two! Rats are a lot more social than Guinea Pigs and therefore need a friend that is the same species as them! Make sure you tell this to your parents before they decide to sell the Guinea Pigs.

If it is better for your guinea pigs and you are sure that they will get a good home then I would suggest that you do give you pigs away. But rats may be cleaner but they are just as needy as a pig. Rats need to be kept with another rat, so if you are going to switch to a new species rats are going to need buddies. Rats also need about a half an hour out of their cage each day and plenty of human interaction. So if you are giving your pigs away because you don't have enough time for them then you will not have enough time for rats.

I have had guinea pigs and rats both, and I like them both. I think rats smell at least as bad as guinea pigs. Rats are not really cleaner. If you could just clean their cage more often (the place where they pee is probably the smelliest) or get some special bedding that absorbs odors better, maybe it would solve your problem. Ask at the pet store for ideas to control odor.

I have 2 rats. They do not smell like roses. Grant it they are always cleaning themselves but u have to keep up on there cage too, b/c there urine doen't smell the greatest either. You might be better with a hampster. But if you do not have time for any rodent they can turn mean and it is not good to leave them in a dirty cage all the time. So you might want to think of maybe a fish or something that is less work and doen't need a lot of time. So yes get rid of your guinea pig but don't get another rodent!!!!!

I think you should give your guinea pigs to someone who LOVES guinea pigs, and trust me there are people who go crazy for them. They are FULL of personality. Find someone who can take better care of them than you can, and you won't have to feel bad. But i also think that if you can't take care of your guinea pigs at this time, then you shouldn't trade them in for a rat. They will smell also, and they will also need time and attention. Maybe you should wait until you have more time to take care of a pet, and then chose which one suits you best.

I don't see how a rat could be any cleaner than a guinea pig. Frankly, if you don't have time for a guinea pig, what makes you think you'll have time to take care of a rat?
Get a pet rock. :-)

Only dirty cages stink. I've had piggies for years and have 5 now. NEVER have, or will stink. It's called taking care of them properly. My pens for one piggie, are 4 square feet each and the large one with the 2 females is 9 square feet. I change the 4' pens every 3 - 4 days, the big one once a week. I use aspen bedding. Any cage or pen under 4 square feet should be change no less than every 2 days.

A rat won't be easier. They are far superior in the intelligence area and they need lots of attention from you. You have to get them out everyday and talk to them everyday. Yeah, they clean themselves well, but they hate dirty cages. I clean my rat cage every week, and when it's time, I can tell the rats are kind of ready for a clean cage.
