Lightning is the usual natural culprit.

A lot of times it is human caused. Either by purposeful arson or accident -- tossed cigarette, unextinguished camp fire, a controlled burn that got out of control, etc.

Well, the overall cause of the vast majority is a lack of rain. Dry forestation means that only a slight spark is needed. Such a spark could come from a car being parked over dry grass resulting in the hot underside triggering it, thrown cigarettes, lightning, magnified sunlight through glass, and of course - arson.
