Two main ethnic groups in Rwanda (maybe in other countries as well such as Burundi). They were involved in the massacre that killed hundreds of thousands people. The Tutsi (a minority of the population) are generally taller and they were favored as racially superior by the European colonial powers.
Eventually, however, Hutus began to gain equality and eventually overtook the government upon independence, which forced many Tutsis into exile. The exiled Tutsis began using rebel attacks to pressure the Hutu government to negotiate and provide the Tutsis with increased rights.
When the Hutu president's plane was shot down, this set off a massive genocide of Tutsis and Hutus deemed sympathetic toward Tutsi. Tutsi rebels eventually overtook the government and ended the genocide.
