If I'm not mistaken, Koko the Gorilla has told "jokes" in American Sign Language that she thought of herself. I believe it has been documented in several instances that great apes have what could be considered a primitive "sense of humor", even in wild populations.
I doubt that common household animals such as as dogs and cats, however, have the mental ability to comprehend the concept of humor.

If you ever saw my puppy run off with my shoe when I'm trying to get ready for work in the morning, you would know that animals have a sense of humor. That sly look and grin on her little face. I love her inspite of it.

I believe monkeys, cats, dogs and parrots have a sense of humor, or at least they seem to enjoy making us laugh.

Well, mine love to do things that get a rise out of me (like running around the house until I start laughing at them or pawing at me repeatedly until I jump up), so I guess so!

i doubt they have the mental capicity to understand the meaning, or have the desier to amuse their owners. If they amuse their owners, it was most likely unintential, and if they do it again, they did it because it made their owner laugh, which makes the owner happy. they would do it again to make the owner happy, not understanding the whole reason of "amusing" but they do understand happiness, i believe.
