IS is not some other term. it is a verb form that helps to bring out the tense of the situation. IS denotes present tense.It is referred to as a "helping verb or an aiding verb". IS by itself is neither singular nor plural.Its just that when its singular, we use IS, just as we use 'are' for plural, doen't mean 'are' is plural by itself

There really isn't a specific name for them. They are referred to as irregular plurals. Edit- Look at the link below. Irregular plurals follow different rules than regular plurals. Regular plurals end with either 's', 'es', or in the case of 'y' the y is changed to 'i' and 'es' is added.
