What movie did you find was quite gloomy which really felt like it was the coming of the future?

Hey Earful, you pose a very good question here. I never really thought about the type of movies that dominated the 90's but, I totally agree with you, the 90's were full of gloom on the Hollywood front. I'm assuming, if art imitates life, life was pretty rough for us all during the 90's.
The movie that really shook me up was New Jack City (1991).
I recall one montage where the drugs were movie very fast as Neno Brown was movie up in the ranks. To me, the movie pretty much mirrored the times I grew up in. In terms of "coming of the future" Things always get worst before they get better, I think the movement of drugs, like crack and cocaine have dropped off quite a bit since then. I guess America has bigger fish to fry.

I don't quite understand what you mean by "the coming of the future" but Reality Bites was quite gloomy... but a great flick.

i always thought Robocop was a pretty downer movie. The future seemed like a total dump
