it sounds like fin rot! go to walmart and pick up some Medflex right away! do a water change as well! also put in some freshwater aqua salt and rasie the temp to 80 ...ish. But to be on the safe side check out this site to be sure- if this is not it.... write me a private email and I will give you a different site to look at. GOOD LUCK!

As suggested, it could be fin rot and the advise given above are good.

But there is a characteristic some male betta display and thats to nip their own fins. Normally they go for their tails and they could really ravage their tail when they are into it. Normally good specimens with such behaviour are usually use for breeding purpose because during spawning the males sometime rip their fins if the female are feisty.

So keep a eye out of the fish and observe from a distant. you might just find out why.

Fin rot...first thing, do a large water change. Either your ammonia, nitrites or nitrates are too high. Go get some melafix and pimafix, they are wonderful medications and can save a fish on the brink of death. Keep up with water changes, especially since he is in a bowl. Get a filtration system if you can. Good luck.

it is fin rot. Get some fin rot medication. Fin rot is a sign of bad water quality. Test your tap water. It might have high nitrates and/or nitrites.

Use a water conditioner that removes or at least detoxifies those two.

Make sure you put enough water conditioner when you change it, it helps damaged fins grow.
