The weight of my son by ultrasound was way off. He was smaller than what they said. It all depends on the way your ultrasound is read.

My daughter had a 3-D ultra sound the day before her due date. They were doing it strictly to find out how large the baby was. From the measurements of the femur they said the baby weighed right around 9 1/2 pounds. My daughter insisted that they do a c-section when they put her in the hospital 3 days later. The OBGYN wanted to induce her but she is only 5"1" tall and she said she wanted the c-section. The doctor told her that the ultra sound can be off by up to 2 pounds one way or the other. When they delivered my granddaughter by c-section, she weighed 9 pounds 10 ounces. They were off by 2 ounces. I think that is pretty darn good to come within 2 ounces when weighing someone that hasn't even been born yet.

That's a trick question.
It depends on the person performing the ultrasound. And, how good the machine is. If it is your doctor and he's a well established doctor it's probably very accurate. But, it was a tech...then it's up in the air.
If the doctor spots something wrong with the cord - very easy to spot on a good ultrasound - it's a good indicator that the babies weight will be rather low.
But, don't fear. Your babies lungs are well developed by now. All he or she will need is your breast milk and she'll be gaining weight like MAD! :))

Not very accurate, as others have pointed out. Also, what is considered small, large or average is pretty subjective. At 36 weeks, my daughter measured 6 lbs 2 ounces, and they said that was small. !!!
It's good they caught the umbilical cord issue. Congratulations on your upcoming baby. And good for you for missing these last 3 weeks- they are the hardest. =) Hope all goes well!

I had a baby 8 months ago and she weighed 5lbs 8 ounces and she was only 9 days early..My doctor told me that I was doing everything right and that it showed I would have a 7lb baby..Well they were wrong. I didn't go by the weight that they told me just because when I was pregnant I didn't get that big. So I just thought that there was no way I was carrying a 7lb baby. So don't base the weight off of the ultrasound. good luck!

It really depends on the person doing and reading the ultrasound. Most of the time they are pretty accurate, especially if a specialist did the ultrasound. It sounds like if there is a problem with his cord, the measurements are probably pretty close to accurate. I hope everything is ok, good luck!

My dr's (group of three) said that the ultrasound is accurate within about a pound. One of the drs I saw with my first child estimated the baby to be about 10 pounds near the very end of my pregnancy. .. my baby was 11 lbs 7 oz at birth! (Yawzah!) So he said the ultrasound is usually within a pound. I will pray your baby is healthy and over 6 pounds ;) Good luck!

at 36 weeks they estimated my daughter to be 6 lbs 15 oz. @ 39 weeks @ birth she was 8lbs 15oz. And they say that the last month of pregnancy the baby gains a pound a week... so they may have been close. but my neice's umbilical cord wasn't providing her with the nutirents she needed to they took her almost 2 wks early. she weighed 4lbs 3oz and was 17inches long.
hope this helps
God Bless!!

They are not I was told my son was going to be a big baby and he only ended up weighing 7 lbs and he was only 2 weeks old. You are far enough in you pregnency that the baby should be okay and that weight is not that small. He will probaly be in the nicu for awhile after he is born since he is having problems in the womb. Good luck with him babies are wonderful gifts to appreciate and love.

When i went in to the hospital to see about having my son they did an amino b/c i wasn't quite 36 weeks yet and was in early labor for 3 weeks and they stopped it once, but i went to 5 cm. They did an ultrasound and said he wasnt very big..he just measured his thighbone..when I had him he was a little over 10lbs. Not only are they off by weight, but Im sure they were off with my duedate also..
