I'd definitely visit both and get a feel for them. NYU is in the heart of Greenwich Village and will give you a great taste of life in New York City. Duke will give you the beautiful leafy campus experience where student life will center around the university and its activities to a much greater degree than at NYU.

NYU was once a commuter school and a fair number of students still live at home and commute to school, so they're connected to the surrounding city in a way that most Duke students won't be. This can be good - because you'll make friends and they'll introduce you to the city - and bad because there's perhaps a bit less of a unifying college experience at NYU.

NYU is huge and can be impersonal, especially if you miss a registration deadline and can't get into the classes you want. But NYU students pride themselves on being tough New Yorkers, so they tend to take such problems in stride. Duke is a bit less crowded and the environment a bit more protected. Also, NYU students will likely be diverse and open in terms of race, sexual orientation, income and experiences. Duke will have racial diversity, but the vast majority of students will be middle, upper middle class and wealthy students with similar life experiences.

There are a number of good college guides out there that will give you a flavor of what life's like at each school. Read the ones that tell you what students say about the school. Also, most colleges will put you in touch with students who will answer your questions. Don't be shy about calling them, but just note that many students feel an obligation to emphasize their school's best qualities.

You're fortunate to have two great schools to choose from, so you can't really make a bad choice in terms of academics, so give then both a visit and figure out where you'll be most likely to be comfortable. Good luck!

In making college decisions, it is imperative that you choose what is best for YOU. These are both great schools.

But NYU and Duke have entirely different cultures. On the whole, Duke is more politically conservative, NYU more politically progressive. Duke is more suburban, NYU urban. Duke has southern charm, propriety, and mores, NYU has Manhattan's fast pace, cultural diversity, and social consciousness. Duke will provide better housing. NYU is in the middle of NYC, and will outstrip Duke in terms of cultural resources.

Knowing your area of intended study will also help you to make your choice. Engineering? Duke. The arts? NYU.

A visit to each campus will enable you to discover which is really best for you.

To answer your question, I'd pick NYU, but I'd prefer Columbia. :)

Depends on what major; if it's engineering, then definitely Duke, but if it's business, then definitely NYU. If it's neither, I would choose which ever gives me more money. But I'm still leaning towards Duke.

Personally, I'd say NYU. Its a really good school, with a great reputation, and great academics, and its in the heart of Manhattan. What better place to go to school, right?

Duke is also great in terms of academics, but would you really want to live in North Carolina for 4 years of your life? I've been there, and its hicksville.

As others have pointed out, it's really a personal decision. They are very different schools with varying pros and cons. Visit, read up on the schools, talk to current and past students, see which offers more financial support, determine which is better for your potential career plans...and go for it!
