Piggy is a foil to the evil in the others--- evil, which in some is inherent and barely covered by the veneer of civilisation,in some it is deep but can emerge in negative circumstances,in some it is a mere trace that can be fuelled toactivity.Piggy is one of those rare human beings whose own innate goodness blinds him to the evil in others.Hence,he appears naive and is overwhelmed by people and circumstance.Evil exists and to fight it one needs to be aware of it , to understand how it works.spreads and corrupts.Goodness must go hand in hand with intellect and strength.Piggy is merely good He is fat and weak and ""cannot see" So he is vulnerable and killed. Phew! Thats a long ans but I think Piggy's problem is that he doesn't have the equipment to fight evil..... on the other hand, the evil people understand him and laugh at him, can manipulate him and finally destroy him.

Yes, You are right Piggy does not except the cruel behavior from the other boys. Also note that Piggy is obese and wears glasses and all the other boys are athletically fit. Piggy was more of the nice type of guy. If, I remember correctly, one of the evil boys pushed a rock over a cliff and the rock hit Piggy in the head killing him instantly. :(

I hope I answered your question to the fullest.

well Piggy tried to maintain some form of the organized world from which they lived before..but the rebellious boys wanted to be completely anarchists and/or develop their own rules. Piggy didn't agree with this and finally is eliminated..that is if I remember it correctly, I have not read it completely in about 15-20 years,,,

Piggy was the "intellectual" in the story, while Simon the Visionary. Piggy stands for reason. Do you mean to say the intellectual is blind to evil and good? Isn't it more like he is trying to find order in choas? Be civilized in an uncivilized world. I think it is more like that, in this world there is no place for intellects and visionaries.

I read this book and all I remember is that Piggy died by falling and smashing his head against a rock. I think Ralph or someone pushed him...and I remember that I was angry that Piggy was killed...so I think I agree with you.

Are you writing an essay on this? haha

I think he was already kind of an outcast (they did call him "Piggy" for being fat). Because there was no authority there to keep them from picking on him, they kept at it. I would argue, however, that it was part of the other boys' human nature was to pick on him for being different.

Piggy was an outsider before the shipwreck. He is fat, wears glasses and is basically "uncool". He is more of a follower than the moral compass although he did serve that role, too.

i think that he was rejected from society/killed because he thought completly different from everyone else. He was more the nice guy. But since he was heavy they wouldn't listen to him.

Yes, nothing will get you ostracized quicker than seeing people for what they really are.
