diffrent cultures have so many diffrent idea's on this that in some cases are borderline controling.

it means that you need to learn that people who have spent more time on earth, been through more losses, hardships and even love, might, just might, know something more than you and by respecting them, you respect their lives. There's a wonderful Hindu saying, "Namascar," which means, "I honor the light in you." We need to respect all people, old and young, for what they are, which is their humanness, their light inside. Of course, it's hard to respect the elders who have no respect for others, but those that do, well, they're special.
