Feeding patterns will help to influence the sleep schedule. Try giving your baby a heavier last feed at night (make sure baby burps properly) and help baby to be more active during the day time. This will train the baby to sleep longer and more soundly at night. I have 2 kids of my own, I would say 3 months would be a good average to train the baby to sleep for straight 5 hours or slightly more through the night.
If you are going on 100% breast milk (highly recommended for baby's health), you'll have to go with less sleep as babies tend to find breast milk less filling (because breast milk is very easily digestible) and will wake up at shorter intervals. If you are not going on 100% breast milk, let the last feed be formula milk.

My daughter developed a schedule of sorts by about five months. It wasn't me getting her on a schedule (goodness knows if I had picked the schedule I would have scheduled her naps longer than 30 minutes each) but her falling into a schedule. Over time her schedule changed as she switched from three naps to two, then from two naps to one. She's 2 1/2 now and still takes a nap (thank goodness).

Ok, it's been a long time since I had babies. But I do remember that one was easy to regulate and the other refused to be regulated. I mean, she's 19 years old now and still isn't on a routine sleep schedule but at least she doesn't wake me up at night anymore.

My daughter was easy -she was sleeping through the night by 6 months. My son, however, is 10 months, and there are some nights he is still up two, sometimes three times to eat and go back to bed. (And he goes to bed around the same time every night, gets up around the same time in the morning, etc.) So, we are still hoping for a sleep through the night! :) Good luck!

My little one was sleeping through the night at 8 weeks. I think it is important to help their little inner clocks adjust by providing them with ample sunlight during the day (indirect, I don't mean sunbathing). Starting at 1 week, I kept her near a window as much as possible during the day (she even napped in a swing next to the window), then at night she would sleep in her crib in a dark room. My husband and I also took her out during the day for walks as much as possible. I really think this made a difference. I know we were quite lucky with her sleeping like this at 8 weeks...I hope the next one does the same.

My son is nearly 2, and he still isn't on a good sleep pattern. He wakes up between 12 and 2 and cries until we bring him into our room.

Mine was sleeping through the night at 2.5months. Eat/play well during the day, sleep great at night. It was never quite the same, changed slightly every day, but would usually not be up for more than 2hrs for the first 7months of life. Eat, play, nap was our routine during the day.

It took me about 3 months with my son, everyone kept telling me to keep him awake all day but its a little hard when all your thinking about is sleeping all day. I got lucky with my daughter though, she started out sleeping at night, and so didn't need to be trained. Well good luck with your new baby, congrat's
