A walk on is a player who isn't given a spot on a team but at try outs or later, the coach notices that the player has potential and offers him a spot on the team

A "walk on" is the term used for player(s) who did not go through the normal channels for being selected for their team (e.g., such as a try-out).

Walk on's usually make the team by showing exemplary skill which the coach notices. (e.g., hustle, good decision-making skills, effort, etc.) The player is then invited and given a spot on the team.

Hope this was helpful.
