solve by substitution method

x-3 =-3x + 25
+3 +3

x = -3x+28
+3x +3x

4x =28
/4 /4

X = 7

SECOND STEP SOLVE FOR Y USING FIRST EQUATION

Y = x-3
Y =7-3
Y =4

2006-11-13 21:45:22 · answer #2 · answered by Barbara H 2 · 0 0

Y= x - 3
y = -3x + 25 use y=y
x-3=-3x+25 add 3x to each side
4x-3=25 add 3 to each side
4x=28 divide by 4
x=7
substitute
y=7-3
y=4 solution is (7,4)

check
4=-3(7)+25=25-21=4

since y=x-3

can you solve the equation on the right by plugging in x-3 for y?

x-3= -3x + 25 ?

solve for x and then use that info for solving one of the equations for y

2006-11-13 21:37:36 · answer #4 · answered by gggjoob 5 · 1 0

y=x-3 & y=-3x+25
x-3=-3x+25
x+3x=25-3
4x=22
x=11/2=5.5
y=x-3=5.5-3=2.5

(7,4)
x-y=3 ------------eqn1
3x+y=25----------eqn2

by rearranging the given equations
adding eqn1 and eqn2
we get 4x=28
x=7
and subsituting it in eqn we have y=4
