I saw an extra amount of money in my checking account about two months ago, and though I reviewed statements, my checkbook, and the online banking system, i cant find an error anywhere. The money is still in there and the amount hasnt changed. How long should I wait before it is safe to say that it is mine

Personally, I'd wait another month just to be safe. That happened to me once before and after 3 months I credited it to my account.

Well the error is somewhere, there is either an extra deposit or a withdrawal that didn't clear or a deposit for more than you put in your check register or a withdrawal for less than you put in your check register.

When is the last time your checkbook balanced?

The rule for when the bank can no longer correct the error if it is indeed an error on its part depends on what state you live in and will be at least a year and possibly more.

However, if the bank doesn't find the error within a year it is unlikely that they will.

I would go through your statements again and compare it to your checkbook again - looking twice is always a great idea. Most of the time, there is usually a check that hasn't cleared yet or a purchase that wasn't returned that was just overlooked. I worked in banking for about 4 years and saw it all the time, and even when we helped customers go over it, sometimes we miss it too. If you look twice and go back to the point where it balanced to the penny, way to go - it's yours!!!

As your statement would show ALL deposits and you should recognize any strange ones, the only option left is you are making the same clerical error at some point.
Have a trusted relative run the calculator & find the error.

It is never really yours, unless you put it there or someone put it there for you. I would contact the bank and make an inquiry into the money.

Otherwise, you will always be worried about when they will contact you about the money and will you have it to put back if it is a large amount.

Honesty generally pays off in the end. I said generally, because if my wife asks me does she look fat in a dress, I"M SAYING NO!

never....call the bank and resolve it. they keep records. it's only a matter of time before they track down their error and if you spent it, they will hold you responsible
