Turn on the ac and adjust the vent/fan to the front window. That'll clear the front window quick and the front sides. The rest of the windows will follow when the humidity in the car is reduced by the ac. Some cars have the auto window defrost button that will automatically set the correct temperature and air flow to the windscreen. Note, it's not the cold air that defrosts, it's the dry air produced by the ac.

To defrost, heat. To defog, turn on the AC and turn up the heat until comfortable. Unfortunately, not all cars allow this. Defrosting takes as much heat as you can throw at it but defogging takes the driest air you can get. You only get dry air when it comes from the air conditioner and heats up before being blown out.

since fog is condensation or moisture built up on the surface of the window due to the differences in temperature between the inside and outside of the vehicle and the quickest way to remove the moisture is to evaporate the moisture. and the quickest way to evaporate is to heat or have air flow over it at a high rate of speed then you can find out which one works faster by timing how long it takes to heat your vehicle to operating temperature then turn on the defrost and time how long it takes to clear the fog.then you can try just turning on the a/c and timing how long it takes to clear the fog without letting the vehicle warm to operating temperature and see which works faster. don't be surprised if the window fogs for a bit after switching to heat after using the a/c to clear the fog!

Some cars' AC compressors won't run below certain temps.

Got our first snow yesterday.
Cold water will instantly defrost, with the windshield wipers and defroster to keep it clear. I have lived in the mountains for over 20 years, and I have yet to brake a windshield doing this. If you use warm or hot water, then you're definitely headed for trouble.
Best thing, buy a scraper at you local hardware store for $.99, if they aren't giving them away as a promo...........

If your car is equipt with AC, the compressor automatically comes on when you switch on the defrost. The air passes over the evaporator first to dry it, then over the heater core to heat it. So the answer is both. To quickly defrost your windows, pour warm, not hot, water over the outside of the windows.
