ok metal on metal means if your rear breaks are disc it means that the break pads are worn down to the metal and when you apply the breaks you are pressing the metal on the rotar and that would cause them to groove and if the grooves are to deep and you will have to replace the rotar disc.

On the other hand if you have break shoes and a drum the pads on the shoes just like disc breaks have been worn down to the metal and that would cause the metal on metal. Meaning the metal of the worn down break shoes rubbing against the metal of the drum. And if that's the case then your mechanic would have to take the drums and have them turned, meaing to have them smoothed out so I'd say you would be looking at let's see new break shoes haveing the drums truned or quite possible new drums that is if the grooves in the drums are not to deep some where in the ballpark of 250.00 to 300.00 dollars that including parts and labor depending on how much he charges for labor
and howit would take to fix your breaks.

Here's a helpful hint if you want to save some bucks go out and buy the break shoes or if rotar disc buy the disc pads and if the grooves are not to deep take the drums or the rotar disc's to a machine shop and have them turn it. The drums are either 10" or 11" buy them both and what ever he doesn't use take the other one back and get your money and by doin this all you have to pay for is the labor

At our shop, the brakes pads and rotors are $96 to install. The pads run $31.30 and the rotors run $49.99 a piece. So yes that is pretty close. These do have problems with calipers sticking and brake hoses collapsing. So don't be surprised if you need to replace them.

The prices you have been given are in the ball park, I would shop around, but please dont drive unless it is absoutely necessary, metal to metal means that you have no brake linings at all between your rotors and brake pads, it means literally metal to metal contact and continuing to drive it in that condition can cause severe damage or even destroy rotors.

thats not too bad. prob 50 each for rear drums , 45 for shoes and about 75 for labor. the front abs rings sounds kinda high.

he is right in the ballpark for a shop..the only thing that i wonder is if he is including calipers(if it is 4 wheel disc brakes..) that could bring the total up quite bit..ask him about it
pads 60-90 bucks(good) 30 bucks jobber
rotors 70 bucks x2
free up sliders 18.00
labour 64.95
------------------------
252.95 to 312.95

calipers 120 plus tax x2
re/re 29.95x2
bleed and flush 29.95
-------------------------
329 plus tax for the caliper(ballpark)
