I've got a few suggestions...
1) Put a magnolia in your hair and sing "Gloomy Sunday" or "Strange Fruit" as a tribute to Billie Holiday. But if you do "Strange Fruit" dedicate it to the memory of Martin Luther King as it's a song about the bad days in the south.

2) Something more modern? How about some Kate Bush? Might I suggest King of the Mountain? Give you a chance to dance about the stage with an empty Elvis jumpsuit...

3) Wanna get vicious? Sing Carrie Underwoods "Before He Cheats." If you've got a boyfriend that will scare him to death.

4) If you want to find out who in the audience is Irish, sing Foggy Dew. Do it well and every Celt in the audience will have a tear in the eye, for sure. Sinead O'Connor does a heart rending version with the Chieftains.

Find the book "Folk songs for Solo Singers". The arrangements are easy, but very nice. One I especially like is "Homeward Bound." The book is published by Alfred, and should be available online, or at a good music store.

Just sing a song that you know and are comfortable singing. Preferably one you already know the lyrics to. Then you won't have to memorize them.

So what songs appeal to you? What songs do you sing to yourself? I suggest something that you are comfortable with. It can be nerve wracking to get up and perform in front of people so you may want something that comes easy to you.
