There were 2 in a little pot, one was a bright green, the other was a darkish sickly color, and when I touched it, it sunk in. So I tried to remove it and the skin came off, the prickly coat just slipped right off, leaving the tube inside. It won't affected the other one will it?

What caused it to get sick anyway?

yes; get a tool to pop it up out of the soil. you don't want to leave it .check to see if the pot has proper drainage, don't let it sit in water. water once or twice a month depending on location.my cacti do well a once a month ,twice in the summer.sory for your loss, hope I've helped.

over watering, just let it come off by itself.......always let the soil get completly dry before watering it again

Maybe you overwatered, and that one just absorbed the most of it.
