First of all, I would take away the computer. If you sit with him while he's doing his homework, he may get interested in it. And when he starts to consistently do his homework and his grades reflect it, then bring the computer.

He may hate you, but he'll appreciate you later.

Tell him its going to affect his grades and now since when they get a job they have to be in college to get a scholars degree for any job in the world. And if hes not listening you could try to make it fun for him like " Play games that include math, science, history, and everything that he learns in school. Make card games or puzzle games. Or you could go out side and play soccer and when he answers the problem right he could get a goal. Do some thing he likes to do. Well since he likes to be on computer games you could try steering him away and make him more into the sports activity outside (its much healthier in the mind) You could make him do sports its good for the mind. Or you could make a poster telling the job your going to do with him that day like Math (Study) and you write a list on what the test is going to be on. When he gets the answer right you could put a check on the poster next to math and then hell get a treat that he would like to do. (Not ice cream or candy) Activity. Arts and crafts involving history and science or for physical science you could make models of chemicals and make and experiment with it. Let him have fun.

Oh please if you come up with any great solutions to this problem share them with me. I have a daughter in 6th grade who is more into socializing than studying and doing homework. Ive tried talking to her about her future, Ive even had her make out a budget of her own with her working at McDonald's to make her see why she needs to do better. Ive grounded her. But it seems like at that age they have a mind of there own. I know how you feel as I too am worried.

Get them involved in a sport or club at school. This will help them get excited about school. It will also give them something to look forward too. Sports have helped me keep my grades up so I can participate so it really does work.
