Achilles withdrew from the battle after he was dishonored by Agamemnon. Agamemnon had taken a woman named Chryseis as his slave. Her father Chryses, a priest of Apollo, begged Agamemnon to return her to him. Agamemnon refused so Apollo sent a plague amongst the Greeks. Agamemnon consented, but then commanded that Achilles' slave Briseis be brought to replace Chryseis. Angry at the dishonor (and as he says later, because he loved Briseis), Achilles refused to fight or lead his Myrmidons alongside the other Greek forces.

Although Wolfgangs version of the battle of Troy differs from Homers in many ways, (like who took the temple virgin & who Briseis was) due to cinematic expediency, the act that provoked Achilles was the same.
It may be better to check out Wikopedia to get the minor details about Agamemnon and Briseis right or

Did you watch Troy at all? It's pretty close to the legend, although the time frame was quite misleading. The battle of Troy took ten years or so and in the movie it felt like just several weeks (well, 3 hrs) But the movie was cool anyways

Please do NOT go to the movie Troy to answer your questions about the Trojan War! It is not a good representation of the original story.
Achilles withdrew from the battle because he wasn't allowed to rape a Trojan woman,Briseis, that the Greeks had captured.
Edit: I did watch the movie. They took a story about a bunch of idiots killing each other over an outdated system of "honor" and changed it into a romance flick.

Achilles had captured a woman from Troy. However, his spoils was confiscated by Agaememnon(?) and he felt angry at losing the beauty. Hence he withdrew, in protest

Could it have had anything to do with his tendon?
I wish I could help more than that. I found out he entered the battle only for his own fame, but his mother wanted him to have higher ambitions ththan that, to go down in history.
But that surprised me, you would think she would have wanted him not to be a hero. Because hero's can get killed.
I guess that is the way Greece was.
