It didn't. An ape is an ape, while a man is a man. If we made things so we could not quite reach things, would this evolution thing kick into high gear and get us longer fingers? No, but we would feel stupid and frustrated for trying to see if it would work.

because the repitles nuked the planet.
the rest went underground and died off...and then a new breed of alien hybrids engineered the ape....which were the pets...and eventualyl there was a smart ape along the line so that when the progenitors came back to earth they found it was run by their once, endeared pet..
expect the dog to be the next ruler in 5 million years...and please, don't be surprised..

Because they are more intelligent, however they are not as smart, the proof will be when the human types are gone, there will still be plant and animal forms that probably were here before the humans.
